What is Dental Infection

What is Dental Infection?

A dental infection arises when a bacterial infection forms a pocket of pus within your gums. Typically, an abscess manifests as a red, swollen bump, boil, or pimple. While it primarily impacts the affected tooth, the infection has the potential to spread to adjacent bone and neighboring teeth. Abscesses may develop in various locations around a tooth due to diverse underlying causes.

There are three primary types of dental infections that can lead to abscesses:
Gingival Abscess
This type of infection originates in the gums. Typically, it does not affect the tooth itself or its supporting structures.
A periapical abscess occurs at the tip of the tooth root. When a tooth is decayed or fractured, bacteria can infiltrate it and spread to the pulp – the inner part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. From there, the infection can progress to the root tip and eventually extend to the surrounding bone, resulting in an abscess.
This infection begins in the bone and tissues supporting the teeth. Periodontal abscesses commonly arise from gum disease and are more prevalent among adults.

Causes of Dental Infection

Causes of Dental Infection

Anything that provides an entry point for bacteria to infiltrate your tooth or the surrounding tissues can pave the way for a tooth abscess. Causes encompass:
Severe Cavities

When bacteria metabolize sugars in food and beverages, they produce acid that corrodes the enamel, resulting in cavities or tooth decay. These cavities create a gateway for bacteria to penetrate the inner layers of the tooth.

Any form of damage to the tooth, such as fractures or chips, offers a pathway for bacteria to enter. Even without visible cracks, bacteria can infiltrate through microscopic openings and reach the pulp, leading to infection.
This condition involves an infection and inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. As gum disease progresses, it weakens the gum tissues, providing bacteria with access to deeper layers and potentially reaching the pulp of the tooth.
Trauma to the tooth, even if there are no apparent external signs of damage, can harm the inner pulp. This compromised state makes the tooth vulnerable to bacterial invasion, setting the stage for infection to develop.

How Dentists Diagnose Teeth Infection

In order to diagnose dental infection, the dental team of Legacy Dental Care may:
1 2

Suggest a dental X-ray

This aids in identifying dental issues contributing to the abscessed tooth and assessing the infection’s spread to adjacent areas.
2 2

Recommend a CT scan

A CT scan provides detailed insights into its scope in cases where the infection extends to the neck region.
4 1

Conduct palpation and percussion

Sensitivity to touch or pressure in the affected tooth is a common indicator of an abscess.
5 1

Perform thermal tests

These tests assist in evaluating the condition of your tooth pulp, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning.

Teeth infection treatment goals aim to eradicate the infection and mitigate potential complications associated with a tooth abscess. Teeth infection treatment options encompass:
Incision and Drainage
Your dentist performs a minor incision in the abscess to facilitate the drainage of pus. Additionally, they might insert a small rubber drain to maintain the opening, allowing the complete expulsion of the infection.

This procedure serves to eradicate the infection while preserving the affected tooth. By removing the infected pulp within the tooth, the root canal procedure eliminates the source of infection. The void left by the removal is then filled with a suitable material to prevent reinfection. While the pulp is crucial during tooth development, mature teeth can function without it.

Following the treatment, the tooth typically returns to its normal function, although the application of a dental crown may be necessary to safeguard the treated area. With proper care, a tooth treated with a root canal can endure for a lifetime.

In cases where the tooth has suffered irreversible damage due to the abscess, extraction may be the only viable solution. Your dentist may opt to remove the affected tooth to prevent the spread of infection and alleviate associated discomfort.
To aid in the treatment process, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics. It’s crucial to understand that while antibiotics can assist in combating residual bacteria, they do not address the underlying cause of the infection, which is the affected tooth itself.

How can I reduce my risk for tooth abscesses?
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are key to minimizing the likelihood of a tooth abscess. Consistently visiting your dentist ensures early detection of any issues and proactive care to prevent complications. Additionally, promptly seeking dental attention for loose or chipped teeth can help mitigate potential risks. Maintaining proper oral hygiene practices, including brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing once a day, is fundamental for optimal dental health and further aids in reducing the risk of tooth abscesses.
If left untreated, a tooth abscess will gradually extend into the surrounding tissues and beyond, causing significant harm to both your oral and overall health. The progression of the infection may span weeks or even months, with an uncertain timeline. Given that tooth abscesses do not resolve spontaneously, seeking prompt dental attention is crucial to prevent further complications.
After undergoing treatment for a tooth abscess, it’s typical for the condition to improve. It’s normal to experience temporary sensitivity, and it might take a few days to fully recover to your usual state. Since each situation is distinct, the duration of healing can differ. Consult your dentist to understand what to anticipate following your tooth abscess treatment.

I think Dr. Darling deserves 10 stars, but I can only give 5. I haven’t always had the best experiences when it has come to dental care in the past but with Dr. Darling and her staff, it has always been better than expected. I have had the misfortune of needing to contact her office twice for urgent dental concerns. Both times the doctor personally contacted me OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS to help me. If that isn’t the greatest level of patient care, I don’t know what is. I would highly recommend.
