What Is a Single Dental Implant?

A single dental implant is a three-part tooth replacement system placed directly in your jaw. Each implant consists of:

  • A titanium post is inserted into your jawbone, acting as the new tooth root.
  • An abutment that connects the post to the crown.
  • A custom-made dental crown matched to the shape and color of your surrounding teeth.

The implant post fuses with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration. This gives it the stability of a natural tooth root and prevents bone loss, a common problem with other tooth replacement options.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Single Dental Implant

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Single Dental Implant?

Most adults with good general health qualify for a single dental implant. You are likely a strong candidate if:

  • You have one or more missing teeth.
  • Your jawbone has enough density to support the implant post.
  • Your gums are healthy, with no active periodontal disease.
  • You do not smoke, or you are willing to quit smoking during the healing period.
  • You are committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups.

If you have experienced bone loss, a bone graft procedure before implant placement builds up the necessary support. Our team at Legacy Dental Care evaluates your situation thoroughly and walks you through all your options.

Replacing a missing tooth with a single dental implant does more than restore your smile. It protects your oral health for the long term.

  • Looks and feels natural: The custom crown matches your surrounding teeth in shape and color.
  • Preserves bone density: The titanium post stimulates the jaw and prevents bone shrinkage that can follow tooth loss.
  • Protects adjacent teeth: No grinding or alteration of neighboring teeth is required.
  • Long-lasting results: With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, single tooth implants last for decades.
  • Easy maintenance: Brush and floss your implant exactly as you care for your natural teeth.
  • Restored bite function: Eat the foods you enjoy without discomfort or restriction.
  • Improved confidence: Your smile looks complete and natural.

We break the single dental implant procedure into clear, manageable steps so you always know what to expect.
Step 1: Consultation and Examination
We review your dental and medical history, take digital X-rays, and assess your jawbone density. We discuss your goals and confirm whether a single tooth implant is the right solution for you.
Under local anesthesia, we place the titanium post into your jawbone. Most patients report minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.
Over the next 3 to 6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone. This creates the stable foundation the crown needs. During this period, you receive a temporary restoration to keep your smile complete.
Once the post fully integrates with the bone, we attach the abutment, the small connector piece that holds your permanent crown in place.
We place your custom-made dental crown, crafted to match your natural teeth in size, shape, and shade. At this point, your smile is complete, and your new tooth functions like a natural one.

I think Dr. Darling deserves 10 stars, but I can only give 5. I haven’t always had the best experiences when it has come to dental care in the past but with Dr. Darling and her staff, it has always been better than expected. I have had the misfortune of needing to contact her office twice for urgent dental concerns. Both times the doctor personally contacted me OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS to help me. If that isn’t the greatest level of patient care, I don’t know what is. I would highly recommend.

FAQs

divider 02 1
How long does the single dental implant process take?
The complete process, from implant placement to final crown, takes between 3 and 6 months for most patients. Most of this time is the healing period as the post fuses with the jawbone. If you need a bone graft, additional time is required before the implant can be placed.

We administer local anesthesia before placement so you do not feel pain during the procedure. Mild soreness and swelling are normal for a few days after surgery. Over-the-counter pain relievers manage discomfort effectively for most patients.

There is no upper age limit for dental implants. As long as you are in good general health and have adequate jawbone density, you are a candidate. We assess each patient individually during the consultation.
During the healing period, we recommend soft foods while the implant integrates with the bone. Once the final crown is placed, you eat normally, including foods you may have avoided with a missing tooth or denture.
