Dental fear is one of the most common reasons people delay or avoid treatment entirely. At Legacy Dental Care in Ballwin, MO, we take that concern seriously. Our sedation dentistry options allow you to get the dental care you need, without fear, discomfort, or stress holding you back.

Whether you feel mild nervousness or strong anxiety at the thought of sitting in the dental chair, sedation dentistry gives you a safe, controlled way to stay relaxed throughout your appointment. Dr. Brandon Cousins and the team at Legacy Dental Care are trained to provide sedation in a comfortable, carefully monitored environment.

What Is Sedation Dentistry

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

divider 02 1

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. It does not put you to sleep in most cases. You remain awake but feel deeply calm and at ease. You stay aware of your surroundings and can respond to the dentist, but the anxiety and discomfort are significantly reduced.

Sedation dentistry is appropriate for routine procedures such as cleanings and fillings, as well as for more complex treatments. The type and level of sedation we recommend depends on your needs, your medical history, and the procedure involved.

Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry

Who Benefits from Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a good fit for patients who:

  • Experience dental anxiety or phobia
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Need multiple procedures completed in a single visit
  • Have sensitive teeth or low pain tolerance
  • Have had a traumatic dental experience in the past
  • Have difficulty sitting still for extended periods
  • Are undergoing complex restorative or oral surgery procedures

If any of these describe your situation, talk to Dr. Cousins. We will help you decide whether sedation is the right choice for your next appointment.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is the most widely used form of sedation in dentistry. You breathe it in through a small mask placed over your nose. Within minutes, you feel relaxed and at ease. The effects wear off quickly after the mask is removed, so you drive home on your own after the appointment.

Nitrous oxide is safe for children and adults. It is our mildest sedation option and works well for patients with light to moderate anxiety.

Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication by mouth before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you feel noticeably calm. You stay conscious and able to respond, but most patients feel drowsy and remember little to nothing of the procedure afterward.

Because the medication takes time to wear off, you will need a driver to take you home. This type of sedation works well for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures.

IV sedation delivers sedative medication directly into your bloodstream through a small needle in your arm or hand. It works faster than oral sedation and allows us to adjust the level of sedation throughout the procedure.

This option suits patients with severe dental anxiety, those undergoing extensive treatment, or patients who did not respond adequately to lighter forms of sedation. You will need a trusted adult to drive you home, and you should plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

What to Expect During Your Sedation Dentistry Appointment

divider 02 1
Before your appointment, Dr. Cousins reviews your health history and discusses which sedation option is best for you. Here is a general overview of what the process looks like:
Consultation
We review your medical history, current medications, and anxiety level. Dr. Cousins uses this information to choose the sedation method that fits your needs, your health, and the procedure you are coming in for.
Once we finalize your sedation plan, we will provide written instructions to follow before your visit. These cover fasting requirements, medication guidelines, and arranging a driver if your sedation method requires one.
You receive your sedation medication or begin inhaling nitrous oxide at the start of your appointment. Our team monitors your vitals, breathing, and comfort level closely from the first minute to the last.

We walk you through clear recovery instructions before you leave. Nitrous oxide clears your system quickly, so you are ready to go. Oral or IV sedation requires rest at home for the remainder of the day.

Throughout the process, our team closely monitors your comfort and safety. You are never left without attentive, personalized care.

Excellent....

Dr. Cousins and the entire staff are extremely efficient and friendly. Dr. Cousins is incredibly detail oriented. The dental hygiene staff are terrific as well as the office personnel. I would recommend Legacy Dental to anyone. You are treated, and respected, as a patient not as a number.

I think Dr. Darling deserves 10 stars, but I can only give 5. I haven’t always had the best experiences when it has come to dental care in the past but with Dr. Darling and her staff, it has always been better than expected. I have had the misfortune of needing to contact her office twice for urgent dental concerns. Both times the doctor personally contacted me OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS to help me. If that isn’t the greatest level of patient care, I don’t know what is. I would highly recommend.

FAQs

divider 02 1
Will I be completely unconscious during sedation dentistry?
No, not in most cases. The most common forms of sedation, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, keep you awake but deeply relaxed. You remain aware of your surroundings and can respond to Dr. Cousins if needed. General anesthesia, which causes full unconsciousness, is rarely used in a standard dental office and is reserved for hospital-based oral surgery.
Dr. Cousins makes a recommendation based on your level of anxiety, your health history, the type of procedure you need, and any medications you take. During your consultation, be open about your concerns. The more we know, the better we tailor the sedation plan to your needs.
In some cases, yes. If you have enough existing bone to stabilize an implant while the graft heals, we perform both procedures together. In other cases, we stage them separately. We determine the best approach at your consultation based on your bone volume and density.
Coverage varies by plan. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of bone graft costs, especially when the procedure is medically necessary, such as before an implant or to treat gum disease. We review your coverage with you before treatment and help you understand your out-of-pocket costs.
