Bone Graft in Ballwin, MO

When you lose a tooth, your jawbone begins to shrink in that area. Over time, that bone loss makes it harder to place dental implants or wear dentures comfortably. A bone graft rebuilds lost bone, giving your jaw the strength it needs to support replacement teeth.

If you are looking for a Bone Graft in Ballwin, MO, this procedure plays a key role in restoring your oral health and preparing your jaw for long-term tooth replacement.

At Legacy Dental Care in Ballwin, MO, we perform bone grafts as part of a complete, patient-focused treatment plan. Whether you need a graft before an implant or to preserve bone after an extraction, our team walks you through every step so you know exactly what to expect.

What Is a Bone Graft .

What Is a Bone Graft?

divider 02 1

A bone graft is a procedure that adds bone or bone-like material to an area of your jaw where bone has been lost or is insufficient. The graft material acts as a scaffold. Over the following weeks and months, your body grows new, natural bone around it, creating a stable base for dental work.

Bone grafts are common, well-established procedures. Dentists perform them routinely before implant placement, after extractions, and to treat bone loss caused by gum disease.

Why You Might Need a Bone Graft

Why You Might Need a Bone Graft

divider 02 1
You need sufficient bone volume and density for many dental procedures to succeed. Several situations lead patients to need a bone graft:
Preparing for dental implants
Tooth loss leads directly here. Without adequate bone, an implant has no foundation to anchor into.
After a tooth is pulled, the bone in that socket begins to deteriorate within days. A socket preservation graft placed at the time of extraction prevents that loss.
Advanced gum (periodontal) disease destroys the bone that holds your teeth in place. A graft rebuilds that support.
Injury or trauma to the jaw can result in bone defects that need to be filled before other treatment begins.
If you lost a tooth years ago and never replaced it, the area may have lost significant bone volume over time.

Not every bone graft is the same. The recommended approach depends on the treatment area, the amount of bone required, and your overall oral health. At Legacy Dental Care, we assess each patient individually and choose the approach best suited to your situation.

Bone Graft and Dental Implants: A Natural Combination

divider 02 1

For many patients, a bone graft is the first step toward getting dental implants. Implants require a minimum amount of bone height and width to anchor properly. Without that bone, the implant has nothing solid to hold onto.

A bone graft creates that foundation. Once healing is complete, we assess your bone volume and proceed with implant placement. The result is a restoration that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

If you were told in the past that you do not have enough bone for implants, a bone graft in Ballwin, MO, at Legacy Dental Care could change that outcome. Schedule a consultation to review your current bone levels and discuss your options.

I think Dr. Darling deserves 10 stars, but I can only give 5. I haven’t always had the best experiences when it has come to dental care in the past but with Dr. Darling and her staff, it has always been better than expected. I have had the misfortune of needing to contact her office twice for urgent dental concerns. Both times the doctor personally contacted me OUTSIDE OF WORK HOURS to help me. If that isn’t the greatest level of patient care, I don’t know what is. I would highly recommend.

FAQs

divider 02 1
Does a bone graft hurt?
We use local anesthesia so you do not feel pain during the procedure. After the anesthesia wears off, you may experience mild soreness and swelling for a few days. We prescribe appropriate medications to keep you comfortable during recovery.
Full healing depends on the size and location of the graft. Minor grafts, such as socket preservation, often heal within 2 to 4 months. Larger grafts, such as ridge augmentation or sinus lifts, take 4 to 6 months or longer. We monitor your progress throughout.
In some cases, yes. If you have enough existing bone to stabilize an implant while the graft heals, we perform both procedures together. In other cases, we stage them separately. We determine the best approach at your consultation based on your bone volume and density.
Coverage varies by plan. Many dental insurance plans cover a portion of bone graft costs, especially when the procedure is medically necessary, such as before an implant or to treat gum disease. We review your coverage with you before treatment and help you understand your out-of-pocket costs.
Without adequate bone, an implant will not integrate properly. It may fail to fuse with the jawbone, become loose, or fall out entirely. A bone graft protects your investment in implant treatment by ensuring the implant has a solid, stable base.
